Dentures, Partial Dentures, and Telescopic Overdentures

Dentures, Partial Dentures, and Telescopic Overdentures
At MK Dental Office, we understand that many of our patients are interested in dentures to replace their teeth. We consider their lifestyle and appearance goals when deciding whether or not dentures might be the right solution. A partial denture is a removable dental appliance that helps replace one or more missing teeth.
They can be made of different materials, including metal and plastic. There are two primary types of partial dentures: one with a metal frame and arms as shown in picture that attach to natural teeth for stability and one made entirely of acrylic with components that do the same.
The Pros of Dentures
Dentures are removable appliances that can be removed and put back in your mouth. They are an option for people who have lost all their teeth in their upper or lower jaw or both.
Dentures restore chewing function and help support the lips and cheeks, improving your appearance by preventing the sunken-in look that can happen when you have missing teeth.
Dentures can be made to look like your natural teeth, and they are usually less expensive than other options, such as implants.

The Cons of Dentures
Dentures may slip or click when you talk or eat, which can be embarrassing. They also may make it difficult to eat certain foods and need to be removed and cleaned daily.
Dentures may cause gum soreness when first wearing them, but this usually can be corrected by seeing your dentist for adjustments.
Dentures can also change how you speak, and you may have to practice reading out loud to get used to the new way your mouth moves when you talk.
When deciding if dentures are the right choice, weighing the pros and cons to see if they fit your lifestyle and goals is important.
Telescopic Overdentures
A telescopic overdenture is a partial denture that uses precision attachments to snap or slide over natural teeth for stability. Natural teeth are shaved, and conical gold crowns are cemented that fit the conical precision attachments in a telescopic overdenture. The denture slides over the gold crowns and makes them invisible.
These dentures are extremely beautiful and robust. However, the production of these dentures is highly technique sensitive, necessitating the involvement of a master lab technician.
Telescopic overdentures have two major benefits over regular partial dentures:
- They are more stable and less likely to slip
- The attachments connecting the overdenture to gold conical crowns are hidden from view, so the final product looks like a regular set of teeth.
If you’re considering getting a partial denture, ask your dentist whether a telescopic overdenture might be right.
