Inlays, Onlays, and Fillings

Resin or amalgam fillings are an excellent way to restore teeth with caries. They are durable and long-lasting. There are other alternative options to traditional fillings: indirect fillings, also known as inlays and Onlays.

Inlays and Onlays are porcelain replacements for the inner portion of a tooth between the cusp tips. They are custom-fit to your mouth and bonded with high-strength adhesive. The main difference between onlay and inlay is that an onlay covers one or more cusp tips.

How are Inlays and Onlays Applied?

Inlays and Onlays can be done in one or two appointments. Some offices have in-house milling units and can make and deliver these restorations in one position.

Some providers prefer it to be made by a dental technician who requires two appointments. The first visit entails removing the filling being replaced or the decayed area of the tooth. Then, the tooth is prepared for an inlay or only. To achieve a proper fit and bite, the dentist makes an impression of the tooth and sends it to the lab for fabrication. Next, the dentist will apply a temporary filling before scheduling another appointment.

At the second appointment, the dentist removes the temporary filling. After checking the correct fit, the inlay or onlay is bonded to the tooth.
